Your child will change so much during their elementary years — from the inquisitive kindergartner to the independent 5th grader. Important milestones in their education such as reading independently and problem-solving in math will be reached. This is also a time when learning struggles become more obvious; good communication with your child’s teacher can help you identify any issues and intervene early. We have a behavioral health coordinator in each office to help if you do have concerns.

Your child should become more independent with their daily activities such as dressing and brushing their teeth. They can also begin helping with chores around the house to learn how to contribute to the family. Sports or music can teach them the importance of practice and teamwork.

They will lose some of their childhood fears and will gradually be more independent. They may want to have sleepovers with a friend, try more adventurous activities or eat things that before they wouldn’t even try. All children have different personalities and one size parenting does not fit all! Patience and taking the time to get to know your child well will make things much smoother. Raleigh Pediatrics is also here to support you with any concerns or just to reassure you that you are doing the right thing.

Office Visits

During elementary school, your child should be coming in for a comprehensive yearly well exam. These office visits are important for all children and are required for any patients taking medications for chronic conditions such as asthma or ADHD. We will continue to monitor his/her growth and development and screen for any problems. Vision and hearing screening will also be done at some of these visits.

Immunizations

Flu vaccine annually (information posted yearly in the immunization section of the website)
