Indy the Inhaler

Meet Indy the Inhaler, Your New Super Sidekick!

May 5 is World Asthma Day, a global initiative dedicated to improving asthma awareness and care across the globe. We are incredibly excited to mark the occasion by introducing a brand-new face to our family: Indy the Inhaler!

Indy is our new Asthma Program mascot, and also every child’s “Super Sidekick,” joining the team to help make asthma education more approachable, empowering, and, most importantly, fun for our patients.

Why Support Matters: Empowering Our Little Heroes

Asthma is one of the most common chronic conditions affecting children today. For a child, a diagnosis can sometimes feel confusing and alienating. It might mean sitting out during gym class, feeling “different” because of a midday trip to the school nurse, or experiencing the anxiety of a sudden flare-up.

We believe that children with asthma are the heroes of their own story, navigating a challenge. But even the best heroes need support, and a super sidekick!

Making Care Fun: The Mission of Indy the Inhaler

Let’s be honest: medical charts and technical jargon aren’t very exciting! Our mission is always to bridge the gap between clinical excellence and kid-friendliness. A cool sidekick like Indy turns “I have to take my medicine” to “I’m powering up with my sidekick.”

Whether Indy is showing kids how to use a peak flow meter or cheering them on during a lung function test, the goal is to make every visit to our office an adventure rather than a chore. When care is approachable and easy to understand, children are more likely to engage with their treatment plans, leading to better long-term health outcomes.

Indy the Inhaler

Meet Indy the Inhaler

Every great hero has an origin story, and Indy is no different!

Indy wasn’t always a Super Sidekick. Indy began in a high-tech lab where scientists were looking for a way to capture the power of a fresh mountain breeze and put it into the palm of a hand. They knew that many little heroes around the world had the heart of a lion, but sometimes found their chests getting a bit tight during their missions.

Indy realized that while our little heroes have the strength to do anything, they sometimes need a power-up to clear their path. So, Indy strapped on a special cape and headed straight to Raleigh Pediatrics.

Indy’s Super Powers

The Mist of Might: With one big super-powered puff of air, Indy delivers the Mist of Might to help open up airways and keep little heroes moving.

Anxiety Shield: Just by being there, Indy reminds kids that they aren’t alone; even superheroes need a sidekick to help them save the day!

Now, Indy spends his days waiting in backpacks and sports bags, accompanying each hero on their special quest. He doesn’t just deliver medicine; he delivers the confidence to run faster, jump higher, and breathe easier!

Your Superhero Training Manual: The Asthma Action Plan

Every hero needs a plan! Our asthma action plan uses a simple traffic light system to helps our little heroes and their super sidekick, Indy, know exactly what to do based on how they are breathing.

🟢 Green Zone: Goal – All Systems Go!

This is the symptom-free zone where you should be, every day. You feel good, you aren’t coughing or wheezing, and you can play just like everyone else!

  • What to do: Keep taking your daily medications as prescribed by your doctor.

  • Hero Tip: If you have exercise-induced asthma, Indy the Inhaler might provide a power-up puff of Albuterol or another prescribed inhaler 5-15 minutes before you start running or playing sports.

  • Stay Prepared: Make sure your flu vaccine is up to date, and you’re keeping track of your regular physical exams.

🟡 Yellow Zone: Caution – Power Level Dropping

You might be entering the Yellow Zone if you notice:

  • Coughing or wheezing.

  • Waking up at night because of your breathing.

  • A tight feeling in your chest or mild congestion.

  • What to do: Use your “Rescue” or “Reliever” medication (like Albuterol or Xopenex) right away.

  • Important: If your symptoms don’t improve after the first hour of treatment, or if you are still having symptoms after 24 hours, call your doctor.

🔴 Red Zone: Danger – Emergency Support Needed!

The Red Zone is a medical emergency. You need to take your medication immediately and get help right away if:

  • Your medicine is not helping.

  • Your breathing is very hard and fast.

  • You see your nose opening wide (flaring) or your ribs showing (retractions) when you breathe.

  • You are having trouble walking or talking.

  • Immediate Action: Call your doctor immediately. If you cannot reach them, or if your child’s lips or fingernails look blue, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room.
